Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance & Student-Athlete Academic Services
Rebecca Pugh is entering her first year as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance & Student-Athlete Academic Services and her six year at UNLV. Pugh is directly responsible for monitoring and maintaining institutional compliance with the NCAA, Mountain West Conference (MWC), and University rules and regulations primarily related to amateurism, recruitment, eligibility, and financial aid. In addition, she is responsible for promoting the academic success and retention of all student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program. She oversees the day-to-day operations of the NCAA Compliance Office and Student-Athlete Academic Services.
Pugh started her path at UNLV as a student-athlete in the sport of softball in 2002. In 2007, she earned a B.S. in Physical Education K-12 with a Minor in Adapted Physical Education. In 2009, she earned a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration. She started her work experience in the UNLV athletics department as a Compliance Assistant in 2006 and from there went from Assistant Director in 2007 to Director for Compliance in 2010.
In addition to her role as Assistant Athletics Director, Pugh serves as a UNLV Faculty Senator and a member of the following university committees: NCAA Compliance Committee, Student Issues Committee, and Student-Athlete Well-Being Task Force.
Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services
Jackson earned both of his degrees from Texas Tech University; a bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems in 2001, and a master's degree in Higher Education Administration in 2002. Before coming to UNLV, Jackson worked in the Texas Tech Athletic department for three years; serving as a student-assistant, a graduate assistant, and finally, a counseling specialist. Jackson joined the UNLV athletics staff in March 2003 and is a member of the National Academic Advisors Association for Athletics.
Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services
Johnna Strenchock was hired as Assistant Director of UNLV Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) in April of 2012. Prior to arriving on campus she served as an Academic Advisor for the Florida State University football team. Johnna's primary responsibility is to provide academic advisement and support services for the men's football and golf teams as well as the mens and womens tennis teams, while assisting the Director with the daily administration and oversight of the athletics department's academic support program. Johnna earned her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 2008, and her Master's Degree in Sport Administration from Florida State University in December of 2010. Before coming to UNLV, Johnna worked in the Florida State University athletics department for three years; serving as a tutor, post-masters intern/assistant academic advisor, and finally, an academic program specialist for football.
Athletic Academic Advisor
UNLV hired Sydney Lisy as an Athletic Academic Advisor in April of 2013. She is the advisor for Volleyball, Men's Tennis and Men's Soccer. Her additional responsibilities include tutor coordination and rules education. Prior to coming to UNLV, Sydney served as the Compliance Coordinator at Chicago State University and Arkansas State University. Sydney graduated Cum Laude with her Juris Doctor in 2011 from Valparaiso University. She was a Honors Program Scholar and member of the Moot Court Honors Society at Valpo. Sydney was admitted to the Illinois Bar in November of 2011. In 2007, Sydney earned her Bachelors of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Atmospheric Science from the University of Illinois where she was a member of the Fighting Illini varsity softball team.
Athlethic Academic Advisor
David Wedley is the Athletic Academic Advisor for Softball, Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, and half of Football. David also serves as the tutor coordinator and liaison to the Admission's Office. David graduated from UNLV with a M.S. in Sport and Leisure Studies Management in 2009. During his studies, David was a Graduate Assistant within the SLS department, while also volunteering time with the Compliance Office for UNLV Athletics. Prior to his move to Las Vegas, David earned his B.S. from Grand Valley State University, where he served as an assistant baseball coach for four years, providing him with extensive experience in collegiate athletics.
Athletic Life Skills Coordinator/Graduate Athletic Academic Advisor
Marissa Nichols is a second year Ph.D. student in the Higher Education Leadership program with an
area of emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics and research centered on student-athletes.
As a graduate assistant, she is the Student-Athlete Affairs Coordinator (Reaching Excellence Beyond Sports - R.E.B.S. Life Skills programming)
and provides academic advisement and support services for the Women's Golf, Cheer and Dance teams.
She also serves on the Student-Athlete Well-Being Task Force.
Marissa completed her M.Ed. in Professional School Counseling, B.S. in Human Services Counseling and minor in Family Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2004-2010). She competed as a scholarship student-athlete for the UNLV Softball team, with her highest individual accomplishments coming in the form of First Team All-American and member of Team USA's Elite Team. Marissa was employed as a School Guidance Counselor (K-9) in Las Vegas at the conclusion of her career, prior to rejoining UNLV in the fall of 2011 in her current capacity.
Marissa, a native of Southern California, is active in giving private softball instruction to youth athletes in the community, enjoys professional speaking engagements and is a life-long learner in the area of self-development and living your best life.
